Teaching Today, Leading Tomorrow - West Elementary

4th Grade: Writing

During their Writing Class Rotation that is co-taught by Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Wedemeyer, students are working through the writing process using the Step-up to Writing curriculum. Working with another peer or peers during a writing task gives students valuable opportunities to teach, learn, and lead. When students explain their ideas or give feedback, they are teaching—sharing strategies, clarifying concepts, and modeling strong writing skills. As they listen to their partner’s suggestions and explore new perspectives, they are learning—gaining new vocabulary, improving organization, and discovering different ways to express ideas. Finally, when students take turns guiding discussions, encouraging collaboration, and helping their partner(s) stay focused, they are leading—practicing communication, responsibility, and teamwork skills that will help them in future academic and real-world settings.
