Teaching Today, Leading Tomorrow - Glendo Schools

Teaching Today, Leading Tomorrow: Glendo Students Reach for the Stars (and Pumpkins!)

This has been an exciting month of exploration and hands-on learning at Glendo School! Our students have been busy engaging their minds, creativity, and curiosity through two memorable adventures that perfectly capture what it means to learn through experience.

First, we had the incredible opportunity to welcome Lieutenant Colonel Susan McDonald from the Civil Air Patrol to our school. Lt. Col. McDonald led an interactive day of learning focused on space, space exploration, and rocket science.

Students in grades 4–6 took on the challenge of building and launching their own rocket ships. Using STEAM mindsets, they experimented with design, aerodynamics, and propulsion to see whose rocket could soar the farthest. There was plenty of excitement (and a few surprised faces!) as rockets took flight across the classroom.

Students in K–3 explored what it takes to land a rocket ship safely at a space station. Working in pairs, they were thoughtfully grouped by height, age, and gender to test teamwork and problem-solving. Each team collected data to analyze which combinations were most successful and what factors contributed to their precision landings. The activity not only sparked scientific curiosity but also emphasized collaboration and perseverance—skills that will take our young learners far.

Second, our students celebrated the beauty of fall with a field trip to the Ellis Harvest Home Pumpkin Patch and Maze. From navigating the winding corn maze to exploring pumpkins of every size, students experienced firsthand how agriculture shapes our community and seasons. The laughter, teamwork, and discovery throughout the day reflected the joy of learning beyond the classroom walls.

At Glendo, we believe learning happens best when students are engaged, curious, and connected to the world around them. This month’s experiences remind us that whether we’re launching rockets or exploring a cornfield, every day is a new opportunity to learn, grow, and lead.
