Teaching Today, Leading Tomorrow - WMS

One important skill that our students learn here at WMS is working with others. Whether that’s working with a partner or within a small group, students need to be able to interact with each other in a positive manner to accomplish the work. Our students learn how to advocate for themselves, resolve conflict, and how to effectively engage with their peers.

Learning specific skills in each content area is important as students grow and move on from year to year. Working as a team is something that employers are looking for when they hire new employees. As students work throughout the day they have opportunities in classes ranging from Life Skills to Science to practice these skills.

In Life Skills, students have been working together to process locally grown apples into multiple dishes. As you can see from the pictures, students are working together to clean, peel, slice, and dice apples for different dishes. Students are responsible for researching recipes, gathering ingredients, preparing the food, and doing clean up. Students must work together to accomplish these tasks within the class period.

In Science, Mrs. Nichols 6th grade began their first lab on Monday, August 25th.  The lab is designed to get students actively learning the scientific method and using the metric system to measure.  Students designed three model airplanes with the goal of the longest flight. Students then tested their planes outdoors and in the hallways.  They picked a starting point and flew their planes.  They then used two metersticks end to end to track the flight path and measure the distance in centimeters.  Some students had to convert their measurements from meters to centimeters.  Students then organized their data in a table.  Students were required to complete a formal lab write-up.  Students had to follow prompts for the scientific method and insert their own information.  Students created a graph of their data using google sheets and then embedded the graph into their google doc.  They summarized their information following a rubric and guidelines for the scientific method.
